Fire safety for hospitals and healthcare
In a hospital many occupants cannot evacuate themselves, so fire safety rests on protecting patients where they are and moving them horizontally between fire compartments.
Healthcare fire safety differs from other buildings in one basic way: full evacuation is not the first plan. The building is divided into fire compartments with rated walls and doors, so patients can be moved to an adjacent safe zone on the same floor, backed by early detection and suppression that buy staff time.
